AI Use Policy

Effective Date: April 19, 2024

At Policy Analysis Lab, we embrace the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning tools to enhance the quality and usefulness of our content when appropriate. These advanced technologies can serve as powerful aids in our work, allowing us to streamline certain processes, refine ideas, and improve the overall structure and presentation of our materials.

However, we remain committed to ensuring that the core analysis, insights, and substance of our content are the product of human expertise, research, and critical thinking. AI and machine learning will therefore be utilized as complementary tools, not as replacements for the intellectual rigor and human expertise. Instead, we take a ‘centaur’ approach to using AI, which allows us to focus on the tasks where we can add the most value to the benefit of our users and clients.

When employing AI and machine learning, Policy Analysis Lab and its contributors therefore will adhere to the following principles:

  • Enhancing, Not Replacing: AI tools may be used to improve the clarity, organization and presentation of content and code, but not to wholly generate it.
  • Ideation and Refinement: AI might be used to help generate and/or refine ideas, but the development of analysis and recommendations will remain a human-driven process.
  • Streamlining Low-Risk Tasks: AI may be utilized for completing low-risk and repetitive tasks that machines (and AI tools excel at) such as making changes to data, text formatting, adjusting code and/or improving the structure of writing, but all content will be reviewed and finalized by a human author.
  • Derivative Works: AI tools will not be used to rephrase, summarize, or modify existing content in a manner that results in a derivative work closely resembling the original in concept, structure, or essential elements.

Disclosure and Labeling

Content that has primarily been generated using AI will be clearly and transparently labeled as such, such as at the beginning of the content being presented or in the description section of media.

Contributors are required to ensure that their usage complies with these ethical standards to ensure the intellectual integrity and rigor of our work. Violations of this policy will be taken seriously and may result in corrective actions, such as the retraction of published content, suspension of contributor privileges, or other measures deemed necessary to comply with our approach.

This policy will be regularly reviewed to incorporate feedback from clients, users and contributors, while ensuring it remains aligned with the latest industry standards and reflects Policy Analysis Lab’s values.
